TT Carvist

About font family

Introducing TT Carvist—a new display typeface by TypeType! Peculiar, playful, and courageous—this font does an excellent job of grabbing attention!

TT Carvist is a modern, experimental sans serif with extra narrow proportions. At its core lies our TT Tunnels typeface, which has transformed into something completely new and unique.

TT Carvist is notable for its modular structure, 45-degree diagonal outer cuts, closed apertures, and distinctively large ink traps of the lowercase letters. Interestingly, the font doesn’t feature any round letterforms. For example, the tops and bottoms of the letters O and C are rounded, while the sides remain straight. This design choice is also present in the triangular glyphs like v, w, and y, which have straight stems.

The name of the typeface is a reference to stone carving, which is clearly seen in its characteristic traits: geometric precision and sturdy aesthetic. However, TT Carvist can be different. Its bold style looks solid and creates a sense of an impenetrable maze, leaving almost no white space between characters. The light font style, on the contrary, is gentle and elegant, with its pattern resembling weightless lace.

Besides, alternate characters and symbols were added to the typeface to enable customization for specific tasks and make the font even more peculiar. For example, we implemented “wicker” figures 3 and 8, the uppercase letters A and Y, which mirror the design of the lowercase ones, a distinctive lowercase E, a three-legged Cyrillic т, unusual u-turn arrows, and a unique symbol for @.

The Latin alphabet of TT Carvist has a gothic mood, whereas the Cyrillic one’s look is closer to the ancient decorative lettering. Still, the typeface looks fresh and modern, making it an excellent choice for book, magazine, and poster design, event announcements, and more.

TT Carvist includes:

  • 6 font styles: 5 roman and one variable font with a weight variation axis;
  • 803 glyphs in each font style;
  • 29 OpenType features, counting in the possibility to use alternate characters and additional symbols;
  • 195+ languages support.

If you are looking for a distinctive and stylish display typeface for your collection, TT Carvist will be a vibrant addition!

In 2021, we realized that the charm of our modular sans serif TT Tunnels has aged, leading us to give it a makeover. So, we began searching for new visual design choices that could become the foundation of the typeface’s update. It had continued for several months before we finally found the perfect visual style for this font. The updated font family was given a new name—TT Carvist. In crafting the Latin script, we incorporated subtle traces of Gothic calligraphy, and the Cyrillic script features motifs inspired by ancient decorative lettering. Due to these elements, the font turned out to be distinctive, playful, and with a touch of daring. Although the new font family is modular, we meticulously crafted each contour, bracket, and decorative element.

Ideal font pairs with TT Carvist

What is a font pair, and what does it serve for?

A font pair is a combination of two fonts within one text block. Most often, one of the fonts in a pair is a more expressive headline font, and the other one serves to communicate information. Such fonts complement each other and help designers solve various tasks, like highlighting key elements, adding emotional expressiveness to the project, or separating semantic blocks.

How to choose fonts for a project: Several general recommendations

To begin with, establish the project's tone. Choose the fonts that stylistically match the main idea. After that, you need to determine the functions of each font in the project and their hierarchy: which font will complement the design and which one will serve to attract attention as the main element. You need to assess the difference between the fonts and decide what kind of information each of them should convey. First, we recommend choosing the base font you will use most, and then you can find a suitable pair for it.

Core principles of font pairing and recommendations from designers

The main rule you should follow when matching two fonts is that both similarities and differences must be visible between them. You can highlight the coherence of fonts by the following characteristics: contrast, proportions, width, openness of characters, individual letter shapes, and overall tone. Feel free to experiment with different combinations. We also recommend analyzing the projects you like: this way, you can enhance your visual skills, elevate your knowledge base, and gain confidence in dealing with typography.
