TT Octosquares

About font family

Introducing TT Octosquares—a confident and stylish display font by TypeType!

TT Octosquares is an octagonal sans serif with futuristic traits. It’s an expanded and significantly enhanced version of our first commercial typeface, TT Squares. We gave TT Octosquares much more functionality and a fresher, more relevant look.

This typeface stands out for its geometric and distinctively “mosaic” appearance: it looks as if it is pieced together from various elements, which is clearly visible even in the tiniest details. At the stage of perfecting the glyph contours, we refined all the brackets, added distinctive junction forms and noticeable crossbar joints, removed sharpness from the triangular letterforms, and cut all the sharp terminals.

TT Octosquares truly shines in large and medium point sizes: by increasing the size, you can unravel the font’s edges and traits that make it look very unusual. However, the typeface stays readable in smaller point sizes and acquires a more minimalist look. This font is a perfect choice for projects in architecture, design, fashion, technology, and more. It will look equally captivating on a scientific journal cover or a techno-party poster.

The typeface features a variable font with three axes of variation: weight, width, and slant. This allows designers to create unique combinations and adapt TT Octosquares to suit a wide variety of tasks. Besides, the typeface has numerous stylistic alternates, ligatures, old-style figures, circled figures, and a slashed 0.

TT Octosquares includes:

  • 4 subfamilies: Compressed, Condensed, Normal, and Expanded;
  • 72 font styles and one variable font;
  • 825 glyphs in each font style;
  • 35 OpenType features;
  • 210+ languages support.

We increased the number of weights in each of the subfamilies—while in the old versions there were 5 weights, now in each of the subfamilies there are 9 weights. At the stage of working with the contours of characters, we revised the roundings, changed the forms of shoulder and stem crossings, added noticeable shelves at the letters, removed the sharpness from the triangular characters and cut off all sharp endings.

Ideal font pairs with TT Octosquares

What is a font pair, and what does it serve for?

A font pair is a combination of two fonts within one text block. Most often, one of the fonts in a pair is a more expressive headline font, and the other one serves to communicate information. Such fonts complement each other and help designers solve various tasks, like highlighting key elements, adding emotional expressiveness to the project, or separating semantic blocks.

How to choose fonts for a project: Several general recommendations

To begin with, establish the project's tone. Choose the fonts that stylistically match the main idea. After that, you need to determine the functions of each font in the project and their hierarchy: which font will complement the design and which one will serve to attract attention as the main element. You need to assess the difference between the fonts and decide what kind of information each of them should convey. First, we recommend choosing the base font you will use most, and then you can find a suitable pair for it.

Core principles of font pairing and recommendations from designers

The main rule you should follow when matching two fonts is that both similarities and differences must be visible between them. You can highlight the coherence of fonts by the following characteristics: contrast, proportions, width, openness of characters, individual letter shapes, and overall tone. Feel free to experiment with different combinations. We also recommend analyzing the projects you like: this way, you can enhance your visual skills, elevate your knowledge base, and gain confidence in dealing with typography.
